A man who was shot and killed Friday during an attempted home invasion has been identified, according to police.
Birmingham police were called to to the 2500 block of 9th Court South on reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they encountered a man with a handgun and were able to detain him without incident, police said.
While investigating, police found another man in the back of the apartment, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Darius Chatman, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the detained man said an exchange of gunfire occurred after Chatman attempted to rob him at gunpoint.
He was taken to UAB Hospital, where he is in stable condition with a gunshot wound.
