A resident shot two men — one was killed and one was seriously injured — after police say the men broke into the resident’s apartment early Thursday.
About 3:15 a.m. two men entered an apartment at Park Place at City Center, 731 S. 300 East. Information about how the men got into the apartment was not immediately released.
Three adults were inside the apartment at the time, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer. Once inside, there was some sort of confrontation and one of the adults fired multiple rounds at the home invasion suspects.
One of the suspects died inside the apartment. The other man was shot multiple times before running out, Shearer said.
Neighbors who heard the gunshots called Salt Lake police. Officers arrived to find the second man still outside the apartment because he was unable to run any further due to his injuries, Shearer said. That man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to serious.
Investigators do not believe the victims of the home invasion were picked at random, according to Shearer.
“Their relationship is under investigation but we do not feel it’s random,” he said.
Police were still trying to identify the two men who were shot.
Many details about the confrontation were not immediately released, including whether the suspects were armed, whether they made any demands, whether the tenants recognized the men, or whether any other evidence was found inside the apartment.
Shearer said the incident was being investigated as a possible case of self-defense and no one had been arrested as of Thursday.
